Reverse engineering: remaking the part when the drawing is gone
Industrial reverse engineering reconstructs the drawings and the CAD model of a part from a 3D scan of the existing asset, when the original documentation is lost or obsolete (as-built survey). A part to reproduce with no documentation, a supplier that has disappeared, a lead time that has become impossible? We scan the existing asset and reconstruct the as-built drawings and CAD models — ready to modify and to produce.
Describe my needWhen we step in
- Reproduce a part whose drawings have been lost or never existed
- Re-manufacture a component whose lead time has become impossible
- Reconstruct lost technical documentation or an obsolete CAD
- Modify an existing part without its original model
How we work
- Survey. 3D scan of the existing part or installation.
- Reconstruction. (Reverse) editing of the 2D drawings and as-built 3D models.
- Parametrisation. A clean CAD model, usable for modification and production.
- Production. Files ready for machining, casting, welded fabrication, EDM or 3D printing.
What you walk away with
- Dimensioned as-built 2D drawings
- Parametric 3D CAD models
- Universal formats (STEP, IGES) or native (SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD)
- Watertight models ready for 3D printing (FDM, SLA, SLS, metal)

Real-world case
High-tech mechanical components
For a manufacturer of high-tech mechanical components, we delivered bespoke 3D processing integrated directly into their own manufacturing programs, without disrupting the production flow.
“All the files were processed by my programs. Everything went well and the validations are positive. Many thanks for this innovative approach.” — R&D Director
Frequently asked questions
Can you reconstruct drawings whose original is lost?
Yes, it is a recurring case: we scan the existing asset then reconstruct the 2D drawings or parametric as-built 3D models.
Which CAD formats do you deliver?
STEP and IGES (universal), SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD… The native format is agreed upfront for direct integration.
Can we produce from your models?
Yes: consistent parametrisation for CNC machining, watertight geometry for 3D printing, casting and moulding runs.
How does reverse engineering work?
Reverse engineering starts from an existing physical part: we scan it in 3D, then reconstruct a parametric CAD model or 2D drawings usable for production or modification.
Who does the work
SCAD Engineering — 15 years of industrial 3D scanning. Work led by a senior engineer. MASE certification No. 2024-411 (Seveso / ATEX sites). France & abroad.
